What does POF mean, and what happens to a person who has this condition?

POF stands for Premature Ovarian Failure, which is now more commonly called Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI). It is a condition where a woman?s ovaries stop working properly before the age of 40. The ovaries may produce very low levels of important hormones, such as oestrogen, and may not release eggs regularly. As a result, a woman may notice changes in her menstrual cycle, such as irregular periods or a complete absence of periods. It can also make it harder to become pregnant. Many women also experience symptoms similar to early menopause (periods stop permanently and pregnancy is no longer possible), such as hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness, and reduced bone strength over time. The condition can be caused by genetic factors, autoimmune problems, infections, or, sometimes, the exact cause is unknown. It may also develop after treatments like chemotherapy or surgery involving the ovaries. Although it may affect fertility, it does not mean the end of a healthy life. Treatment mainly focuses on replacing hormone replacement therapy, relieving symptoms, protecting bone, and supporting emotional health. In some cases, pregnancy may still be possible with medical assistance such as donor eggs or fertility treatments.
