I have gum swelling with pain and bleeding. How can it be treated?
Gum swelling with pain and bleeding is most commonly due to gingivitis caused by plaque buildup, and it can usually be treated effectively with good oral care: brush gently twice daily with a soft toothbrush, use dental floss, and rinse with warm salt water to reduce swelling. An antiseptic mouthwash may also help. Avoid very hard brushing, tobacco, and sugary foods. However, since there is pain and bleeding, it is important to visit a dentist for proper cleaning (scaling) and to rule out more severe gum disease. The dentist may prescribe medications if needed. Seek care sooner if swelling worsens, pus forms, or pain becomes severe.
