I have a thick, yellow sticky cough at night, and lumps of mucus are coming out. I also feel pressure in my head when I blow my nose. Can you suggest an expectorant syrup or treatment to help clear the cough and mucus more quickly?
A thick, yellow cough with sticky mucus and head pressure can occur when mucus builds up in the airways or sinuses due to infection, allergy, smoking, sinus blockage, or chest inflammation. Night-time coughing often becomes worse when mucus collects in the throat and chest while lying down. Pressure in the head while blowing the nose may suggest sinus congestion along with the cough. Expectorant syrups containing ingredients that thin and loosen mucus may help the phlegm come out more easily. Steam inhalation, warm fluids, and sleeping with the head slightly raised may also reduce mucus buildup during the night. Some people feel better with saline nasal rinses because they help clear thick nasal secretions and reduce sinus pressure. Very thick yellow mucus does not always mean a bacterial infection, but persistent symptoms may sometimes need chest or sinus evaluation. Fever, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain, blood in sputum, or a cough lasting many weeks should be evaluated thoroughly, as a deeper chest or sinus infection may require different treatment.
