Ear pain in young children is commonly caused by a cold, a throat infection, an ear infection, water entering the ear, wax buildup, or pressure changes after coughing and congestion. Some children may also become irritable, cry more, touch their ears repeatedly, or have disturbed sleep because ear pain can become stronger at night. Treatment usually depends on whether the pain is caused by infection, congestion, or irritation inside the ear. Doctors commonly use paracetamol or other child-safe pain medicines to reduce discomfort and fever when present. Warm compresses near the ear and keeping the child hydrated may also help improve comfort. Antibiotics are not always needed because some ear pain improves with supportive care, especially when related to a viral cold. Avoid putting oil, earbuds, or home remedies deep inside the ear because this may worsen irritation. Fever, pus discharge from the ear, swelling around the ear, hearing difficulty, or continuous crying can mean the ear problem is becoming more painful and may need proper ear treatment.
