My 4-year-old daughter has been complaining of ear pain for the past 2 days. What medicine can help her feel better?

Asked by Female, 32 · 1 month ago

Ear pain in a 4-year-old child for 2 days may happen because of ear infection, cold-related ear blockage, throat infection, trapped fluid behind the eardrum, wax buildup, or irritation after a cough and cold. Children may become irritable, cry more, touch their ears repeatedly, develop a fever, or have difficulty sleeping because ear pain can become stronger while lying down. Pain-relieving medicines such as Paracetamol may help reduce ear pain and fever temporarily when given in the correct dose according to the child’s age and weight. Warm compresses near the ear, adequate fluids, proper rest, and keeping the child comfortable may also help relieve discomfort. If the pain is related to cold or nasal blockage, steam exposure and hydration may help improve pressure inside the ear gradually. Antibiotics or medicated ear drops may sometimes be needed if a bacterial ear infection is confirmed after examination. Do not put oil, garlic, or unprescribed drops into the ear because this may worsen irritation or infection. Consult a doctor if high fever appears, pus starts coming from the ear, hearing becomes reduced, vomiting occurs, or the pain becomes more severe.
