What is Kelfer 500 mg used for, and how should it be taken?
Kelfer 500 mg (Deferiprone) is used to treat iron overload in patients who receive frequent blood transfusions, especially those with thalassaemia (an inherited blood disorder in which the body cannot produce normal haemoglobin). These transfusions can cause excess iron to build up in the body, and this medicine helps remove it by binding the iron and excreting it mainly through urine. It can be taken with or without food, preferably with meals to reduce stomach upset. It is usually taken 2 to 3 times daily, or as prescribed by your doctor. The medicine should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break it. If a dose is missed, take it when remembered, but if the next dose is near, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose. If you experience any unusual symptoms while taking it, report them to your doctor promptly.
