Redness and yellow discharge from the eye in a 36-day-old baby can be caused by blocked tear ducts, a bacterial eye infection, irritation, or newborn conjunctivitis. In small babies, sticky yellow discharge may collect repeatedly because tears do not drain properly, and the eye can appear red or watery. Eye infections in newborns should be assessed carefully because babies at this age are very sensitive to infections.
