My child has been having watery, loose motions 8 to 10 times a day since yesterday, with no fever. What medication or oral rehydration therapy should I give them?
Please start Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) immediately. Give small, frequent sips of ORS (about 50-100 ml) after every loose motion to prevent dehydration. You can also give generic zinc supplements (20 mg daily for 10-14 days) to help reduce the duration of diarrhoea. Continue offering regular fluids and light, easily digestible food. Avoid sugary drinks and juices, and do not give any anti-diarrheal medicines without a prescription. If your child becomes unusually sleepy, has sunken eyes, a dry mouth, or goes without urinating for over 6 hours, please consult a paediatrician promptly.
