I have severe itching due to scabies, and a dermatologist advised me to apply GBHC lotion once at night before bed. Does it have any side effects, and is Permethrin a better option?
Severe itching in scabies is common because the mites irritate the skin. GBHC lotion can be effective when used as prescribed, but it may cause side effects like skin irritation, burning, dryness, and, in rare cases, more serious effects if overused, so it should be applied carefully and only as directed. Nowadays, Permethrin 5% cream is usually preferred because it is safer and highly effective. Whichever treatment you use, apply it over the whole body from neck down (or as advised), leave it on for the recommended time, and repeat if needed. It is also very important to wash clothes, towels, and bedding in hot water, avoid close contact until treatment is completed, and treat close family members at the same time to prevent reinfection. Mild itching can continue for 1-2 weeks even after successful treatment, but if symptoms persist or worsen, follow up with your dermatologist.
