My child has a runny nose and cough. What is the appropriate treatment?
A runny nose and cough in a child are most often due to a mild viral infection like the common cold and usually improve within a few days with simple care such as giving plenty of fluids, ensuring adequate rest, and keeping the child comfortable. Saline nasal drops can help clear a blocked nose, and steam inhalation (if age-appropriate) or a humid environment may ease breathing; for children above one year, a small amount of honey can help soothe the cough. Avoid giving over-the-counter cough syrups without a doctor's advice, especially in younger children. Keep the child away from dust and smoke, and monitor symptoms closely. You should consult a doctor if the child has a high fever, fast or difficult breathing, poor feeding, persistent vomiting, or if the cough lasts more than 7-10 days.
