I have tested positive for VDRL. What does this result mean, and what should I do next?
A positive VDRL test is a screening test for syphilis, which is a sexually transmitted infection. It does not always confirm an active infection, as false-positive results may occur due to other conditions, such as pregnancy, recent infections, or autoimmune diseases. To confirm the diagnosis, additional specific blood tests are required, such as TPHA (Treponema pallidum haemagglutination assay) or other treponemal tests. You should consult a doctor, who may recommend treatment if the infection is confirmed. Syphilis is usually treated effectively with antibiotics such as penicillin. It is also important that sexual partners are tested and treated if needed to prevent reinfection. Avoid sexual contact until your doctor advises it is safe. With timely treatment, the condition is completely curable and long-term complications can be prevented.
