Anakinra

Anakinra is a prescription injection used to treat the painful symptoms and swelling associated with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, especially when other treatments have not worked well. It is also prescribed to treat certain rare autoinflammatory genetic conditions that cause excess swelling and fever throughout the body. For this medicine to work effectively, you must inject it consistently every single day at around the same time. Since Anakinra is given as an injection under the skin, it can be taken with or without food. While taking Anakinra, you may experience some mild side effects, with temporary redness, itching, or swelling at the injection site being the most common. However, because this medicine affects your immune system, it can make it easier for you to get infections. You should contact your doctor immediately if you develop a fever, chills, a persistent sore throat, or other signs of an active infection.

Do not take this if you are allergic to proteins made from Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria or any of the ingredients in Anakinra. Before you start this treatment, it is highly important to tell your doctor if you have a history of frequent infections, a weakened immune system, asthma, or kidney damage, as these conditions may affect how you use this medication.

Using Anakinra alongside other specific biologic medicines, such as tumour necrosis factor (TNF) blockers, is not recommended because it severely increases your risk of developing serious infections. Additionally, you should avoid receiving live vaccines while on this treatment. Before receiving any vaccine, including non-live vaccines, discuss the timing and suitability with your doctor, as your treatment and immune status may affect vaccination recommendations. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, breastfeeding, or are an elderly individual, talk to your doctor or pharmacist to weigh the risks and benefits before starting therapy.

Serious Side Effects (Call a doctor right away):

• Signs of a serious infection, such as high fever, severe chills, persistent cough, or burning during urination
• Severe allergic reactions, including difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, or throat, and severe hives
• Unexplained, easy bruising or unusual bleeding
