Bosentan
About Bosentan
Bosentan is an anti-hypertension medication primarily used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (high pressure in the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the lungs). Bosentan can even increase our exercising ability, delay disease progression, and improve quality of life. Blood pressure is the measurement of the force that our heart uses to pump blood to all parts of the body. Hypertension is a chronic condition in which blood pressure is too high. This condition can lead to hardened arteries (blood vessels), decreasing the blood and oxygen flow to the heart.
Bosentan contains Bosentan, an endothelin receptor antagonist used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. It works by blocking the action of endothelin. Endothelin narrows the blood vessels and increases the pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs. Bosentan helps to relax blood vessels by blocking endothelin and increasing the blood supply to the lungs.
Take Bosentan as prescribed by your doctor. You are advised to take Bosentan for as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you, depending on your medical condition. You may experience swelling of legs and ankles, headaches, and diarrhoea in some cases. Most of these side effects of Bosentan do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if the side effects are persistent, reach out to your doctor.
Please inform your doctor if you have liver dysfunction before starting Bosentan. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not take Bosentan a pregnancy category X drug. If you are taking Bosentan, women should use a reliable form of the contraceptive pill to avoid pregnancy and continue to use it one month after stopping Bosentan. Also, the blood test for liver functions should be monitored regularly and for the haemoglobin level.
