Redness around the penis or urine area in a child is often caused by moisture, diaper rash, urine irritation, fungal infection, or friction from tight diapers or clothing. Sometimes the skin becomes bright red and sore simply because the area stays wet for long periods. Mild swelling, itching, or discomfort during urination can also happen if the skin becomes irritated.
