I have high blood pressure, around 160/95, and also feel anxious most of the time. What medicines or treatments can help manage both conditions?
Blood pressure around 160/95 is higher than normal and, along with ongoing anxiety, can increase strain on the heart, blood vessels, sleep, and overall health. Anxiety may temporarily raise blood pressure further because stress hormones increase heart rate and tighten blood vessels. Headache, restlessness, chest heaviness, palpitations, or poor sleep are also common in people dealing with both conditions together. Treatment usually focuses on controlling blood pressure while also reducing stress and anxiety levels. Doctors commonly use blood pressure medicines such as telmisartan, amlodipine, beta blockers, or similar medicines, depending on age, heart health, diabetes status, and kidney function. Anxiety management may include counselling, breathing exercises, regular sleep, walking, meditation, and sometimes anti-anxiety medicines if symptoms are severe or persistent. Reducing salt, smoking, alcohol, excess caffeine, and late-night stress may also help improve blood pressure control. Chest pain, severe headache, breathlessness, blurred vision, or very high blood pressure readings can indicate uncontrolled hypertension and may need proper medical care.
