Severe ear pain during a heavy cold in children can occur when the infection or mucus blocks the tube connecting the ear and the nose. This pressure buildup may lead to ear inflammation or an ear infection, which can cause sharp pain, irritability, poor sleep, fever, or reduced hearing. Younger children often develop ear discomfort after a cough, cold, or nasal congestion.
