About Topovid Gargle

Topovid Gargle is an antiseptic and disinfectant used to treat a sore throat. It also treats and prevents infections of the mouth and throat lining, such as gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and mouth ulcers. Topovid Gargle is also used to cleanse the mouth for preparation of the oral mucosa before any injection, dental surgery or tooth extraction.

Topovid Gargle contains Povidone iodine. It works by inhibiting the growth of infection-causing microbes. It is effective against bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa.

Topovid Gargle may cause common side effects, such as mouth or throat irritation, dryness of the mouth and throat, and a burning sensation. These side effects gradually resolve over time and do not require medical attention. However, if the side effects persist longer, please seek medical help.

What if I have taken an overdose of Topovid Gargle

In case of accidental swallowing of large quantities of Topovid Gargle , it may result in acute iodine toxicity. It may cause abdominal symptoms, decreased urine production, pulmonary oedema, circulatory failure, or metabolic abnormalities. Seek medical help immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

Drug Warnings

  • Do not use Topovid Gargle if you are allergic to povidone-iodine.
  • Let your doctor know if you have an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) or any other thyroid diseases (nodular colloid goitre, endemic goitre or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis), liver, or kidney problems.
  • Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or are a lactating mother before using Topovid Gargle .
  • Inform your doctor if you are taking any other medicines to prevent potential interactions.

Topovid Gargle may interfere with thyroid function tests due to the absorption of iodine. Please inform your doctor before starting Topovid Gargle if you have any history of thyroid problems. Topovid Gargle can also yield false-positive lab results, such as tests using toluidine or guaiac, to detect haemoglobin or glucose in the stool or urine.

Topovid Gargle is not meant for long-term usage or routine use. Do not use Topovid Gargle for more than seven days unless instructed to do so by a doctor.

Topovid Gargle is intended for treating sore throat and infections associated with the mouth and throat. It is not meant for use as a breath freshener.

Topovid Gargle will not stain your teeth. The natural brown colour of Topovid Gargle is due to its component, Povidone iodine. However, it may sometimes cause discolouration of dentures and braces. Therefore, remove them if possible before using Topovid Gargle .
