I am experiencing prolonged and heavy menstrual bleeding lasting about 20 days after insertion of a Copper-T. This is my second period after insertion. Is this normal, and what should I do?

It is common to experience slightly heavier and longer periods during the first few cycles after Copper-T insertion, but bleeding lasting as long as 20 days is not normal and needs medical attention. Prolonged bleeding can lead to weakness and anaemia. You should consult a gynaecologist, who may check the position of the Copper-T, rule out infection or other causes, and prescribe medicines to control bleeding. In some cases, if symptoms are severe and persistent, removal or change of the contraceptive method may be advised.
I am considering Copper-T for my wife and would like guidance regarding its safety, effectiveness, and overall family planning options.

Copper-T is a highly effective, long-term, non-hormonal contraceptive method that can prevent pregnancy for 5-10 years, depending on the type. It is suitable for women who want spacing between children and prefer a reversible method. Some women may experience heavier periods or cramps, especially in the initial months. Before insertion, a doctor will evaluate overall health, rule out infections, and explain the procedure and follow-up care. You can also discuss other family planning options, such as condoms, oral contraceptive pills, injectable contraceptives, or hormonal IUDs, and choose the method that best suits your wife's health, comfort, and future pregnancy plans.
