About Diconal Nasal Drops

Diconal Nasal Drops is a nasal spray used to relieve nasal congestion and stuffiness caused by colds, hay fever, allergies, and sinus infections. It works quickly to reduce swelling in the nasal passages, making it much easier to breathe through your nose. This medicine provides temporary comfort so you can sleep and go about your day without discomfort.

You should use this medicine only when needed, up to a maximum of three times a day, or as directed by your healthcare provider. It is important not to use it for more than 3 to 5 consecutive days to prevent your congestion from returning or worsening. Using a cool-mist humidifier in your room and staying well-hydrated can also help soothe dry nasal passages during your recovery.

While using Diconal Nasal Drops, you may experience mild, temporary side effects such as a burning sensation in the nose, sneezing, or nasal dryness. If you experience serious side effects, such as a rapid heartbeat, severe headache, or dizziness, stop using the spray and consult your doctor immediately.

Talk to your doctor before starting this medicine if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, thyroid disorders, or an enlarged prostate. Do not use this medicine if you have narrow-angle glaucoma or have recently undergone brain or nasal surgery. It is also not suitable for young children unless specifically prescribed by a paediatrician.

This nasal spray can interact with certain medications, especially monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) used for depression, which can cause a sudden, severe rise in blood pressure. You should avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption while using this medicine, as they can dry out your nasal passages further. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or an elderly individual, please consult your doctor before using Diconal Nasal Drops.

How Diconal Nasal Drops Works

Diconal Nasal Drops contains xylometazoline and sorbitol, which work together to target nasal stuffiness while protecting your nasal tissues. The first active ingredient, xylometazoline, is a decongestant that binds to specific receptors in the blood vessels of your nasal passages. This action causes the swollen blood vessels to narrow, which reduces swelling, decreases mucus production, and opens up the airways. The second active ingredient, sorbitol, acts as a humectant. It draws and retains moisture within the nasal membranes, forming a protective barrier that prevents the drying, cracking, and stinging that decongestants can sometimes cause. Together, they clear your nose while keeping it comfortable and hydrated.

FAQs

Diconal Nasal Drops is used to treat nasal congestion (blocked nose) associated with the common cold, sinusitis (inflammation of the nasal sinuses), and allergic rhinitis (hay fever).
Diconal Nasal Drops contains Xylometazoline and Sorbitol, which work together to reduce nasal swelling and congestion by narrowing blood vessels and to prevent dryness and irritation in the nose by moisturising the nasal passages.
Inform your doctor before taking Diconal Nasal Drops if you have any heart, liver, or kidney diseases, inflammation of air passages, thyroid disorders, enlarged prostate, urination problems, high blood pressure, or diabetes. Please consult your doctor if you have any other medical concerns before starting Diconal Nasal Drops. Diconal Nasal Drops is contraindicated in recent nasal surgery, chronic nasal inflammation, glaucoma (high eye pressure), and adrenal gland tumours (phaeochromocytoma).
Do not stop taking Diconal Nasal Drops even if you feel better, as it may worsen your condition. For the best advice, consult your doctor and do as recommended.
Take the missed dose of Diconal Nasal Drops as soon as possible. However, if it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
It is advisable not to share the bottle with others to prevent infection. Also, please do not use the nasal spray/drops bottle after 28 days of opening it to prevent contamination.
Store Diconal Nasal Drops according to the leaflet’s instructions and away from sunlight at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. Dispose of unused medicine. Keep it out of reach of pets and children.
No. While it is highly effective for allergy-related stuffiness, you should not use Diconal Nasal Drops for more than 3 to 5 days in a row. Using it longer can cause rebound congestion, making your nose even more blocked. For long-term allergy management, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about daily alternatives.
If the spray gets into your eyes, rinse them immediately and thoroughly with plenty of clean, cool water for several minutes. If you experience persistent irritation, redness, or changes in your vision, contact an eye specialist or your doctor right away.
Nasal sprays containing these active ingredients come in different strengths. Stronger formulations designed for adults must not be given to young children, as they can cause serious side effects like extreme drowsiness or low blood pressure. Always talk to your pediatrician before giving any nasal decongestant to a child.
This is likely due to rebound congestion, which happens when decongestant sprays are used for too many consecutive days. The blood vessels in your nose become dependent on the spray and swell up when you stop using it. If this happens, stop using the spray and talk to your doctor for advice on how to clear your nose safely.
There is limited safety data on the use of this nasal spray during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Because decongestants can enter the bloodstream in small amounts, you should talk to your doctor to weigh the benefits against any potential risks before using it.
