Keep the wound clean and dry. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before changing the dressing daily. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly (like Vaseline) or an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment (like Polysporin) to keep it moist and prevent scarring, then cover with a sterile bandage. Watch closely for signs of infection, such as worsening redness, swelling, warmth, throbbing pain, or pus. If you develop these symptoms, or if your tetanus vaccination is not up to date (within the last 5 to 10 years), please consult a doctor. Avoid using harsh chemicals like hydrogen peroxide, which can delay healing.
