About Tipanat 20 Tablet

Tipanat 20 Tablet is a prescription anticancer medicine used to treat adults with advanced colorectal cancer or advanced gastric (stomach) or gastro-oesophageal junction cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. It contains trifluridine and tipiracil and is marketed under brand names such as Lonsurf in many countries, including India. It is usually prescribed when previous cancer treatments are no longer effective or are no longer suitable. This medicine helps slow the growth and spread of cancer cells.

Tipanat 20 Tablet is taken in treatment cycles, usually twice a day on specific treatment days followed by a planned rest period. Take each dose within 1 hour after finishing your morning and evening meals, exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Staying well hydrated, eating small, frequent meals, and getting adequate rest may help you cope with treatment-related side effects such as fatigue or nausea.

While taking this medicine, your doctor will monitor your blood counts regularly because it can reduce the number of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. Common side effects include nausea, tiredness, diarrhoea, and reduced appetite. Contact your healthcare team immediately if you develop a fever of 38°C or higher, chills, severe vomiting, severe diarrhoea, unusual bruising or bleeding, or any signs of infection.

Before starting treatment, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, or any other long-term medical condition. Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to trifluridine, tipiracil, or any of the other ingredients in this medicine. Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant because it can seriously harm an unborn baby. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment or for 1 day after the final dose.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all the medicines, vitamins, herbal products, and supplements you are taking before starting treatment. Some medicines may affect how this medicine works or increase the risk of side effects. Women who can become pregnant should use effective contraception during treatment and for at least 6 months after the final dose. Men with female partners who can become pregnant should use effective contraception during treatment and for at least 3 months after the final dose. Older adults may require closer monitoring during treatment.

Uses of Tipanat 20 Tablet

Your doctor may prescribe Tipanat 20 Tablet to help manage the following conditions:

  • Metastatic colorectal cancer: Tipanat 20 Tablet helps by slowing the growth and spread of colon or rectal cancer cells in patients who have already received other standard chemotherapy treatments.
  • Metastatic gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma: Tipanat 20 Tablet works to control the progression of stomach cancer or cancer of the area where the esophagus meets the stomach in cases where previous therapies did not stop the disease.

Key Benefits

When used as directed as part of your treatment plan, Tipanat 20 Tablet may provide the following benefits:

  • Delaying cancer progression: Tipanat 20 Tablet helps to extend the time during which the cancer does not grow or spread, providing more stable periods of health.
  • Convenient oral administration: Because this medicine comes in tablet form, patients can take their chemotherapy treatment at home rather than requiring continuous intravenous infusions at a clinic.
  • Managing advanced disease: It offers an active treatment option for patients who have already completed other standard chemotherapy lines, helping to manage symptoms of advanced cancer.
Side effects of Tipanat 20 Tablet
  • Talk to your doctor about medicines to manage neutropenia based on the underlying cause.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water.
  • Avoid unpasteurized dairy products.
  • Include iron-rich foods like dark leafy vegetables, lean red meat, legumes and fish in your diet.

  • Limit tea, cocoa, and coffee as these can slow iron absorption.
  • Exercise regularly; however, do not overdo it.
  • Managing a low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) caused by medication usage requires a multi-step approach. Here are some steps to help manage the condition:
  • Inform your doctor about your low platelet count and medication usage. They will assess the situation and guide the best course of action.
  • Your doctor may recommend adjusting or stopping the medication that is causing a low platelet count. This could involve switching to alternative medication or reducing the dosage.
  • Monitor your platelet count regularly through blood tests to track any changes. This will help the doctor determine the effectiveness of the treatment plan.
  • If an underlying condition, such as infection or inflammation, contributes to the low platelet count, your doctor will treat it.
  • In some cases, alternative treatments like platelet transfusions or medications that stimulate platelet production may be necessary.
  • Avoid risky activities and certain medications; eat a balanced diet with plenty of water to reduce bleeding risk and boost overall health.
  • If you experience severe bleeding or bruising, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
  • Rest well; get enough sleep.
  • Eat a balanced diet and drink enough water.
  • Manage stress with yoga and meditation.
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine.
  • Physical activities like walking or jogging might help boost energy and make you feel less tired.
Overcome Medication-Induced Nausea: A 9-Step Plan
  • Inform your doctor about the nausea and discuss possible alternatives to the medication or adjustments to the dosage.
  • Divide your daily food intake into smaller, more frequent meals to reduce nausea.
  • Opt for bland, easily digestible foods like crackers, toast, plain rice, bananas, and applesauce.
  • Avoid certain foods that can trigger nausea, such as fatty, greasy, spicy, and smelly foods.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, such as water, clear broth, or electrolyte-rich beverages like coconut water or sports drinks.
  • Use ginger (tea, ale, or candies) to help relieve nausea.
  • Get adequate rest and also avoid strenuous activities that can worsen nausea.
  • Talk to your doctor about taking anti-nausea medication if your nausea is severe.
  • Record when your nausea occurs, what triggers it, and what provides relief to help you identify patterns and manage your symptoms more effectively.
  • Consume more protein-rich foods and healthy fats like beans, avocados, cheese, nuts and lean meats to minimize appetite.
  • Prefer foods high in fiber to help feel full for a long time.
  • If you have decreased appetite, eat only when you are hungry.
  • Eat several small meals or snacks all day.
  • Try to take only small sips of fluids while eating.
Here are the precise steps to cope with diarrhoea caused by medication usage:
  • Inform Your Doctor: Notify your doctor immediately about your diarrhoea symptoms. This allows them to adjust your medication or provide guidance on managing side effects.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to replace lost water and electrolytes. Choose water, clear broth, and electrolyte-rich drinks. Avoid carbonated or caffeinated beverages to effectively rehydrate your body.
  • Follow a Bland Diet: Eat easy-to-digest foods to help firm up your stool and settle your stomach. Try incorporating bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, plain crackers, and boiled vegetables into your diet.
  • Avoid Trigger Foods: Steer clear of foods that can worsen diarrhoea, such as spicy, fatty, or greasy foods, high-fibre foods, and dairy products (especially if you're lactose intolerant).
  • Practice Good Hygiene: Maintain good hygiene to prevent the spread of infection. To stay healthy, wash your hands frequently, clean and disinfect surfaces regularly, and avoid exchanging personal belongings with others.
  • Take Anti-Diarrheal Medications: If your doctor advises, anti-diarrheal medications such as loperamide might help manage diarrhoea symptoms. Always follow your doctor's directions.
  • Keep track of your diarrhoea symptoms. If they don't get better or worse or are accompanied by severe stomach pain, blood, or dehydration signs (like extreme thirst or dark urine), seek medical help.

How Tipanat 20 Tablet Works

This combination tablet contains two active ingredients that work together to fight cancer cells inside the body. Trifluridine is absorbed directly into the DNA of rapidly growing cancer cells. Once inside, it damages the DNA structure, which prevents the cancer cells from dividing and multiplying. Tipiracil acts as a protective shield. It blocks the natural enzymes in your body that would normally break down the first active ingredient. This keeps the cancer-fighting medicine active in your bloodstream for a longer period, making the overall treatment much more effective.
