About Opdyta 100 mg Injection

Opdyta 100 mg Injection is a prescription immunotherapy medicine used to treat several types of advanced cancers, including melanoma, non-small cell lung cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, head and neck cancer, and classical Hodgkin lymphoma. It works by helping your body's immune system recognise and attack cancer cells more effectively, slowing disease progression and improving treatment outcomes in eligible patients.

This medicine is administered as an intravenous (IV) infusion by a trained healthcare professional in a hospital or infusion centre. Depending on your condition and treatment plan, it is usually given every 2, 3, or 4 weeks. It is important to attend every scheduled appointment and complete your treatment as recommended by your doctor.

Your healthcare team will monitor you regularly throughout treatment with blood tests and clinical assessments. Unlike chemotherapy, Opdyta 100 mg Injection stimulates the immune system, which can sometimes cause it to attack healthy organs. Contact your doctor immediately if you develop persistent diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, a new or worsening cough, shortness of breath, yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe skin rash, vision changes, or unusual fatigue.

Before starting treatment, tell your doctor if you have an autoimmune disease, have received an organ transplant, or have lung, liver, kidney, or thyroid problems. Inform your healthcare provider about all medicines, herbal products, and dietary supplements you are taking before beginning treatment.

This medicine may harm an unborn baby. Women should use effective contraception during treatment and for at least 5 months after the last dose. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment and for at least 5 months after the final dose. Older adults generally tolerate this medicine similarly to younger adults but may require closer monitoring depending on their overall health.

Uses of Opdyta 100 mg Injection

Your doctor may prescribe this medicine to help manage the following conditions:

  • Melanoma: Opdyta 100 mg Injection helps treat advanced or metastatic melanoma and may also be used after surgery in certain patients to reduce the risk of the cancer returning.
  • Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC): It helps slow the growth of advanced lung cancer and may be used alone or in combination with other anticancer medicines depending on the stage of the disease.
  • Renal cell carcinoma (Kidney cancer): It helps control advanced kidney cancer and may be used alone or together with other targeted therapies.
  • Classical Hodgkin lymphoma: It is used to treat adults whose lymphoma has returned or has not responded to previous treatments.
  • Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: It helps manage recurrent or metastatic head and neck cancer that has progressed despite previous treatment.
  • Urothelial carcinoma (Bladder cancer): It is used in selected patients with advanced or metastatic bladder cancer when other treatments are not suitable or have stopped working.

Key Benefits

When used as prescribed, Opdyta 100 mg Injection offers several important benefits in the treatment of advanced cancers.

  • Helps the immune system fight cancer: Unlike traditional chemotherapy, Opdyta 100 mg Injection works by strengthening your body's own immune response, allowing immune cells to recognise and attack cancer cells more effectively.
  • Slows cancer progression: By improving the immune system's ability to control cancer growth, this medicine can slow the spread of the disease and help keep it under control for longer periods.
  • Provides long-lasting responses in some patients: Some people experience durable responses that continue even after treatment has ended, making immunotherapy an effective option for selected cancers.
  • Improves quality of life: By controlling tumour growth, Opdyta 100 mg Injection may reduce cancer-related symptoms such as pain, breathing difficulties, or fatigue, helping many patients maintain their daily activities and overall well-being.

How Opdyta 100 mg Injection Works

Opdyta 100 mg Injection contains nivolumab, a type of immunotherapy known as a programmed death receptor-1 (PD-1) inhibitor. Cancer cells can protect themselves from the immune system by activating the PD-1 pathway, which acts like a natural 'off switch' on T-cells. When this pathway is activated, immune cells are less able to recognise and destroy cancer cells. Nivolumab blocks the PD-1 receptor on T-cells, preventing cancer cells from switching off the immune response. This allows the immune system to recognise, attack, and destroy cancer cells more effectively. Because it works by stimulating your immune system rather than directly killing cancer cells, responses may take several weeks or months to become noticeable.
