Avoid contact of the dropper or tip with fingers, eyes, and eyelids when using Acivir Eye Ointment 5 gm. Topical eye products, when contaminated by patients with eye diseases, may cause bacterial keratitis (an infection of the cornea) and ocular infections (eye infections), which result in vision loss.
A mild, temporary stinging or burning sensation immediately after applying the ointment is common and usually disappears within a few minutes. If the stinging is severe, gets worse, or is accompanied by swelling, stop using the ointment and talk to your doctor right away.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should only use Acivir Eye Ointment 5 gm if your doctor determines that the benefits outweigh any potential risks. While very little of this eye medication is absorbed into the bloodstream, it is always safest to talk to your doctor before starting treatment.
Once the tube is opened, bacteria from the air or surrounding environment can enter the nozzle. Using contaminated ointment after 4 weeks increases your risk of developing a secondary bacterial eye infection. Talk to your pharmacist if you need advice on safe disposal.
