The skin on the front part of my penis has become red and dark/black in color, with some scratches or cracks present. Please suggest possible causes and suitable treatment or remedies.
Redness, dark or black discolouration, and small scratches or cracks on the front part of the penis can occur due to irritation, fungal infection, allergy, friction during sexual activity, dryness, poor hygiene, or inflammation of the foreskin and penile skin, commonly called balanitis. In some cases, repeated scratching or the use of strong creams containing steroids can damage the sensitive skin and cause darkening, thinning, or cracking over time. Fungal infections are especially common in warm and moist areas and may cause itching, burning, redness, or peeling skin. The dark colour is often due to irritation and healing changes after inflammation, but persistent colour change should still be examined by a doctor. To help the area heal, gently clean the penis daily with plain lukewarm water and dry it properly afterwards. Avoid harsh soaps, antiseptics, deodorants, tight underwear, and excessive rubbing or scratching. Wear loose cotton underwear and avoid sexual intercourse or masturbation until the skin improves, as friction can worsen the cracks and pain. Do not apply random creams or steroid-containing ointments without medical advice because they can make infections worse or delay healing. Since the problem involves persistent skin changes and cracks, it is best to consult a dermatologist or urologist for proper examination and treatment. The doctor may check for fungal infection, diabetes, skin allergy, or other conditions and prescribe the appropriate antifungal, antibacterial, or healing medication if needed. Seek medical care sooner if you develop swelling, discharge, ulcers, severe pain, fever, or difficulty passing urine. Early treatment usually helps prevent complications and improves recovery.
