I am currently taking methotrexate, celecoxib, prednisolone, and folic acid for rheumatoid arthritis, but I also have high uric acid and high cholesterol levels. What medications should I take or avoid to manage all of these conditions safely?
To manage high cholesterol, a statin (like atorvastatin) is usually safe, but your doctor must monitor your liver function closely since both statins and methotrexate can affect the liver. For high uric acid, allopurinol is commonly prescribed, but kidney function must be monitored alongside celecoxib. What to avoid: Additional NSAIDs (like ibuprofen), as you already take celecoxib. Low-dose aspirin (unless prescribed), which can raise uric acid. Excess alcohol, which raises uric acid and increases methotrexate-related liver toxicity. Speak with your doctor about safely tapering prednisolone, as steroids can elevate cholesterol. Do not start any new medications without your physician?s approval.
