Psoriasis is a long-term skin condition in which the immune system causes skin cells to grow too quickly, leading to thick, dry, scaly, itchy, or red patches on the skin. Although psoriasis may not have a permanent cure, it can often be controlled effectively with regular treatment and lifestyle care. The most important part of management is keeping the skin well moisturised because dryness can worsen scaling and itching. Doctors may prescribe medicated creams or ointments, including steroid creams, vitamin D-based creams, or other anti-inflammatory medicines, depending on the severity of the condition. In moderate or severe psoriasis, treatments such as phototherapy (light treatment), tablets, or newer immune-targeting medicines may be recommended by a dermatologist. Stress, smoking, alcohol, skin injury, infections, lack of sleep, and certain medicines can trigger flare-ups, so avoiding these triggers may help reduce symptoms. Using mild soaps, avoiding harsh scratching, taking short, lukewarm baths, and maintaining a healthy weight can also support better skin control. Some people with psoriasis may also develop joint pain or swelling, so medical review is important if this occurs. Regular follow-up with a dermatologist is helpful because treatment often needs adjustment over time. With proper care, many people are able to control psoriasis well and improve their quality of life significantly.
