The Steps Baby Bath Procedure
Here are the exact steps the baby bath procedure guidelines dictate for a safe, soothing tub bath.
Step 1: Prepare the Environment
Ensure the room is warm and draft-free. Babies lose body heat very quickly.
Step 2: Check the Water Temperature
Fill the infant tub with about 2 inches of warm water. Test the water with the inside of your wrist or your elbow. It should feel comfortably warm, not hot. The ideal temperature is around 100°F (38°C).
Step 3: Secure the Baby
Undress your baby and immediately place them in the water, feet first. Use your non-dominant hand to firmly support your baby’s head and neck at all times. Use your dominant hand to wash them.
Step 4: Wash the Face First
Dip a clean washcloth or cotton ball into plain, soap-free water. Gently wipe the baby's eyes from the inner corner to the outer corner. Use a fresh part of the cloth for each eye to prevent cross-contamination. Wipe the rest of their face with plain water.
Step 5: Clean the Body
Add a tiny drop of mild cleanser to your washcloth. Wash the baby from top to bottom. Pay special attention to the deep creases in their neck, armpits, behind the ears, and finally, the diaper area.
Step 6: Wash the Hair Last
By washing the hair last, you prevent the baby's head from getting cold during the bath. Lean them back slightly, massage a drop of baby wash into their scalp, and rinse carefully using a cup of water, making sure the water flows backwards and not into their eyes.
Step 7: Dry and Wrap
Carefully lift the baby out of the tub. Remember, wet babies are very slippery! Wrap them immediately in a warm towel. Pat them dry gently, ensuring all skin folds are completely free of trapped moisture, which can cause rashes.
