How can type 1 diabetes be prevented?

Type 1 diabetes cannot usually be completely prevented because it is an autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. Unlike type 2 diabetes, it is not mainly caused by lifestyle factors such as obesity or unhealthy eating. At present, there is no guaranteed way to stop type 1 diabetes from developing, especially in people who have a family history or genetic tendency. However, maintaining overall good health through balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, proper sleep, stress management, and timely treatment of infections may support the immune system and general well-being. Early recognition of symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, sudden weight loss, fatigue, and increased hunger is very important because early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent serious complications. In some high-risk individuals, doctors and researchers may monitor certain blood markers or family history to identify early risk, but this is usually done only in specialised medical settings. Although prevention is not currently possible in most cases, modern treatment, regular insulin use, healthy lifestyle habits, and proper monitoring allow people with type 1 diabetes to live active and healthy lives.
